For sheer variety of sport there is little to
beat a walked up or mixed day. Pheasants will still be the main
quarry but presented in a multitude of ways including some driven.
Woodcock and snipe may well feature in the bag, as well as duck
and pigeon. If you have your own dog this is where they will
earn their keep, although unruly animals are a liability and
mean fewer birds in the bag at the end of the day. Cost is from £150 per gun, depending on venue, and although the walking is
not too onerous guns should be reasonably fit. |

For a taste of something different why not try
driven snipe? These elusive and unpredictable birds provide
some of the most challenging sport. Their zig zag flight has
been the downfall of many a fine shot and a box of cartridges
will often result in only 2 or 3 birds in the bag. The numbers
vary from season to season depending on weather conditions on
the continent but hard weather can see them arrive in their
thousands. The drives tend to be short, often only taking in
a few fields at a time, with the keeper using his local knowledge
to find the snipe on the day. |
